Self Storage + Solar

Why Use Solar for Storage Facilities?

The self-storage industry is booming. And with this growth comes increased competition! Set your business apart—and cut costs—by investing in a solar system.

Available Tax Credits and Savings

Qualifying businesses can offset the cost of their new solar systems with the Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which covers 30% of the total solar + battery installation cost. Companies can also pair it with tax deductions like the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System to save up to 50% on their costs in the first year alone!

Net Metering to Offset Your Electric Bills

Maintaining storage units requires a surprising amount of energy. From lighting to climate-control, these electricity bills can quickly eat into your profits. Solar allows you to cut these costs. With net metering, you can sell back excess power generated by your system to further reduce your electric bills.

Environmentally Conscious

Solar creates cleaner air and lowers your carbon footprint, features that are particularly attractive to environmentally-conscious Millennials and Gen Z consumers.

Available Tax Credits and Savings

Federal Investment Tax Credit (FITC)

The Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is available to commercial solar systems. All projects will receive a minimum 30% tax credit calculated from the total project cost. Some projects will qualify for additional bonus tax credits if the project is located in an Energy Community (10%) AND/OR a Low Income Community (10%). These credits are stackable.

Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS)

The Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) is a method of depreciation that allows projects to recover their investment’s tax deductions within the first year of operation. When used with the FITC, projects can  reduce them  by 50%!

USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP)

Depending on the products produced and/or location, small businesses and agricultural producers may qualify for the USDA Rural Energy for America Program, which covers up to 25% of total solar system costs. Seal Solar is happy to help complete and submit the paperwork.

FAQs

Will solar panels work on my roof?

If your roof is more than 15 to 25 years old, we recommend having your roof inspected before installing solar panels. We have many partners in the roofing industry that can assist with inspecting your roof. Systems work best on flat roofs in good condition and can be used on nearly any style of solid roofing.

Do I receive enough sunlight?

Solar requires access to sunlight. If you have questions about your facility’s solar suitability, contact our team for a free estimate.

What kind of system do I need?

The setup depends on your facility’s size and layout and how much wattage you need. Self-storage facilities often opt for systems connected to the power grid, which allows them to supplement with standard electricity or to sell the excess back to the electric company. Off-grid and backup power options are also available.
