Tax Incentives for Commercial Solar Panels

The IRS offers two tax incentives for commercial solar panels in Arkansas.

Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC)

Through the Inflation Reduction Act signed into law August 16, 2022, the business investment tax credit (ITC) is extended and lifted to 30% for projects that have started or start construction before the end of 2024 and the credit becomes available to stand-alone storage. The 30% ITC is now available for businesses through the year 2032. The incentive drops to 26% in 2033, decreases to 22% in 2034, then drops permanently to 10% for commercial projects beginning January 1, 2035.

Solar also becomes eligible for the production tax credit which is currently at $0.026/kWh for 2022 and rises with inflation. After 2024, the credit transitions to a “tech neutral” structure.

More details about the ITC are available here

Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS)

Second, Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) is a method of depreciation in which a business’s investments in solar property can be recovered through tax deductions. MACRS benefits can be taken all in the first year of system operation. Taken together, the federal tax credit and depreciation can reduce commercial solar project costs by about 50% within the first year!

USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP)

The USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Grant covers up to 50% of total solar system cost for eligible agricultural producers and rural small businesses. Grant application deadlines are March 31 and October 31 each year. Seal Solar will handle all of the necessary paperwork for you. Our grant approval track record is 100%! Learn more here.

Other Grants and Solar Programs

Depending on your line of business and where you are located, you may also qualify for any number of solar energy grants and programs. Contact Seal Solar to discuss what you may qualify for in the Arkansas area.

Commercial Solar Panel Installation Process

Site Evaluation

This is the first step of every commercial solar panel installation. The initial evaluation will inform the design of the solar panel system and the solar panel installation. Site evaluation includes:

  • Legal reviews
  • Gathering permits
  • Determining where and how the system will connect to the grid
  • Shade analysis
  • Structural evaluation
  • Gather Utility Data
  • Geological and topographical surveys

System Design

After the initial evaluation is completed and all necessary permits and paperwork are completed, Seal Solar will design the perfect solar system for your business. Once the plans are finalized, we’ll provide you with a copy that illustrates how the panels will be arranged and how construction will be executed.

Construction

Next is the solar panel installation. The timeline for your construction will vary depending on the size of the system and the complexity of the project. Generally speaking, smaller projects may take 2-3 weeks to complete. Major construction may take a few months. We’ll work with you to create a schedule of minimal disruption so you can continue business as usual. We stay in contact throughout the process, from obtaining utility bills to switching on your system!

Commissioning

Once your system is complete and running correctly, the utility company and city, if applicable, will inspect your system and approve it for connection. Once that happens (usually within a week to a month depending on the speed of your local government), you will be operating and producing clean energy!

FAQs

What types of commercial buildings can be solar-powered?

Our rooftop commercial solar systems can be installed on most industrial, warehouse, commercial, retail, and agricultural buildings. We’ll have a structural engineer come inspect the facility and roof closely before finalizing a system plan. We also offer ground-mounted and carport systems for our commercial clients depending on the size of your future system and the space available at your facility.

Are rebates and incentives guaranteed?

States may change their rebate and incentive programs at any time, so there is no guarantee. However, Seal Solar is happy to evaluate and help you apply for any available grant, rebate, or incentive program for which your business qualifies at the time of construction. If approved, you will be grandfathered in for 20 years if net metering laws change after signing.

What happens to the excess energy I collect?

Depending on where you live and how your system is built, you may be able to store the power by using batteries for emergency backup power or sell it back to the grid to offset your electricity costs.
